Promoting young talents!

Scientific career

A special focus of the HRW is the promotion of early career researchers, who are represented in particular by doctoral candidates. As the first point of contact for doctoral candidates, those interested in doing a doctorate and supervising professors, we provide valuable tips and advice on doing a doctorate at a university of applied sciences in cooperation with the Department of Organisational and Human Resources Development.

Doctoral programme NRW

The doctoral programme is a scientific initiative of the universities of applied sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is mandated by higher education legislation to strengthen and expand co-operative doctorates at universities of applied sciences and universities. It offers those interested in a cooperative doctorate the opportunity to get to know each other and to network across universities.

University professors are given the opportunity to jointly supervise young researchers and act as reviewers, while potential doctoral candidates are given easier access to a cooperative doctorate.

Members of the Graduate Institute NRW are the 16 state and four state-funded universities of applied sciences as well as the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration NRW.

Interdisciplinary research is carried out in the specialised groups of the NRW doctoral programme. Members of the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences are actively involved in the specialist groups.

The HRW is active in the following specialist groups

Spokesperson: Prof Dr Stefan Geisler
Member: Prof Dr Sabrina Eimler

Cooperative Doctorate

The universities of applied sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia have the right to cooperative doctorates via §§ 67 and 67a HG. This requires cooperation with universities or higher education institutions authorised to award doctorates. This is another way of enabling young academics at UASs to complete a doctorate.

We therefore speak of a cooperative doctorate if a doctoral procedure is carried out in cooperation between a university or higher education institution authorised to award doctorates and a UAS. The academic work is usually carried out at the UAS. Universities and higher education institutions authorised to award doctorates create the possibility for UAS professors to participate in the doctoral procedure on an equal footing as supervisors, reviewers and examiners.
