Never stop growing

We are the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences. We want to be a special university and, even more than before, an entrepreneurial university. A university that offers all students, employees, cooperation partners and people in the region the best possible opportunities to grow with us. We offer all first-year students access to academic education with a focus on STEM subjects and business administration.

Entrepreneurial University

Our entrepreneurial mindset is a particular strength of HRW and manifests itself in the attitude and behaviour of our employees, students and graduates. It ensures that the potential of all members in terms of creativity, creative culture and entrepreneurial spirit is utilised in the best possible way. The entrepreneurial mindset is an overarching learning objective of all degree programmes; it shapes the university's teaching and process culture and is reflected, among other things, in university-related start-ups by students and employees.

Excellent teaching

Excellent teaching in line with our mission statement Teaching enables successful learning for every student at the HRW. Personal contact between lecturers and students and networking with the HRW community are particularly important to us.

The teaching content and methods are geared towards the future skills and social responsibility of graduates, so that our students are optimally prepared for their future fields of activity through suitable didactic teaching/learning concepts, innovative teaching spaces, learning areas tailored to individual needs and a wide range of support services.

Teaching is continuously developed in an interdisciplinary manner by teaching staff and teaching support departments. The transition to university is particularly successful for the many pioneering students. They are supported during the introductory phase of their studies with numerous support programmes.

We live diversity

We attach great importance to promoting diversity within the student body and among employees by integrating gender equality and diversity into our everyday life at HRW.  As a STEM university, we strive to represent and increase the diversity of teams in order to counter the shortage of skilled labour.

Gender equality and diversity are also becoming increasingly important in research and are changing not only the research teams but also the methods and content of research. As a modern and open-minded university, it is important to us to support and promote this development in the best possible way.

The Gender Equality & Diversity Management team, the Family Office and the central Equal Opportunities Officer offer a wide range of services to all members of the university. Our work focuses on a joint commitment to more equal opportunities and an inclusive university culture through education, sensitisation and awareness.

Practice-orientated research

HRW's application-orientated research contributes to the innovative capacity of the western Ruhr region by transferring knowledge to companies and society and involving students in current issues. The university aligns its research priorities with the needs of society and its own strengths and promotes interdisciplinary thinking as an essential component of its degree programmes and research teams. In order to respond to future educational needs, the HRW is constantly working on the further development of its study models and strengthening collaborations. The attractiveness of the campus is strengthened by innovative room and space developments, a student-friendly infrastructure and social offerings in order to create an attractive study environment in the long term.

Co-operations

The HRW stands for interdisciplinary cooperation and close integration of STEM and business. The interaction of all disciplines with their different approaches and perspectives is further promoted by even stronger networking with society, companies and science - regionally, nationally and internationally. In all degree programmes, students work on holistic solutions in interdisciplinary practical projects.

Sustainability

Against the backdrop of social relevance and our own specialist expertise, HRW focuses on the topic of sustainability in the sense of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This is a result of our academic self-image, our personal motivation and our social mission. The university aligns its activities in teaching, research and transfer as well as in the organisation with the sustainability goals of the United Nations. Together with students, companies and social stakeholders, HRW develops technical and business solutions for responsible and sustainable economic activity.
