Do you have questions about borrowing?

A separate registration in the library is not necessary for employees and students of the HRW.

All other groups of people can register to use the library at any time during opening hours. Please refer to the table below to find out which documents you need.

As the GHBS has not been updated since 2004, we are now converting our inventory to the RVK (Regensburger Verbundklassifikation).

Special features when using the Duisburg/Essen University Library

The HRW has concluded an agreement with the Duisburg-Essen University Library for the use of its media by its students and staff.

Based on this agreement, the Duisburg-Essen University Library can be used free of charge and easily with the HRW student or staff ID card. An additional separate library card is not required.

To activate this function, simply go to one of the subject libraries in Duisburg or Essen during the service hours for new registrations, which you can view at https://www.uni-due.de/ub/abisz/anmeld.shtml#UA, and present your HRW student ID card and your identity card, alternatively your passport with registration certificate or, if applicable, your electronic residence permit.

Important! Only students who enrolled in the 2010/2011 winter semester must obtain a replacement ID card from the HRW Student Services before using the Duisburg-Essen University Library. Unfortunately, due to a technical error in winter 2010/2011, a number combination that was unusable for the IT system used in Duisburg-Essen was printed on the ID cards. However, newer and older ID cards can be used without restriction at the UB DuE and do not need to be exchanged.

The HRW Library acquires many media exclusively for one of its two campuses due to the thematic focus of the degree programs located there.

It is therefore possible to order media that are not available on your own campus free of charge via our Catalog Plus from the library of the other location.

The delivery of the media takes 3-4 days due to the postal exchange between the campuses. You can check whether an item has arrived for you at any time in your user account and you will also be notified via e-mail.

The Library of things is available to students and offers a variety of devices that can be used for studies and events. The offer is free of charge and includes the following devices:

iPads with keyboard: Ideal for digital work and note-taking.

Energy meters: For measuring and analyzing energy consumption.

Webex pens: For interactive presentations and online sessions.

Calculators: For mathematical calculations and scientific applications.

Powerbanks: To always have enough power for your devices when you are on the move.

Laser pointer: For precise presentations.
Projector: For projecting presentations and materials.

WebCam: To record images or videos, especially for video conferencing or streaming.

3-in-1 charging cable: A 3-in-1 charging cable is used to charge different devices such as smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices with different charging ports.

Wired mouse: A wired mouse is used to control the cursor on the screen and make inputs by connecting it directly to the computer via a cable.

Headset: A headset is used to listen to audio and speak through a microphone at the same time, for example during online meetings or gaming.

Borrowing these devices is a helpful support for your studies and allows you to work more flexibly and efficiently.

To access full texts in our licensed databases, please select the one you require under the Databases tab in KatalogPlus. As soon as you have clicked on the respective link in the hit list, you will be redirected to the login page. There you log in with your university ID and password.

ODER (von der Seite über KatalogPlus):

The library provides you with an extensive range of licensed databases and electronic full texts. These can be found in the Catalog Plus under the Databases tab and the designation “TOP Databases”.

If you have any questions about using our services, please do not hesitate to contact us. We also offer regular training courses in which we give you lots of tips and tricks for successful research.

When using our resources, please always remember the copyright regulations and, in particular, do not pass on downloaded data in an uncontrolled manner.

If you are a member of the university and would like to access our electronic resources from outside the university network, you will need a VPN client. You can find information on this on our service pages in the HRW Portal.

To access our licensed e-books, please search for the literature you require in KatalogPlus. As soon as you have clicked on the respective link in the hit list, you will be redirected to the login page. There you can log in with your university ID and password.

Please note that there are different access models depending on the publisher, where you can either download the entire book, a certain number of pages or only access online.

To access journals online, go to the Databases tab. There you will find the Journals A-Z section, under which all journals are listed. You can then search for the specific title of the journal and the traffic light will tell you whether we have full access to the e-journal or not.

If you cannot find a book in our library, you have the option of ordering it from another library via interlibrary loan.

To do this, use the “Interlibrary loan” button in KatalogPlus. The loan period and renewal options for these media are determined by the lending library and can therefore vary. If you would like to renew an interlibrary loan item, please contact the library staff.

You can also order articles from journals or books via interlibrary loan. For journal articles, please use the “Journal articles” option.

Copies of the articles will be sent to you in electronic form by e-mail via a retrieval link.

There is a fee of €1.50 per interlibrary loan order.

Use of the library is free of charge for all members and alumni of the HRW as well as for students and employees of other state universities in NRW.

You can return items borrowed from the HRW Library either at the Mülheim Campus or at the Bottrop Campus. This is independent of which of the two locations they come from and where you originally borrowed them. This also applies to media ordered via interlibrary loan and loaned to you at one of the two locations.

You are also welcome to use our return boxes on the ground floor of building 5 in Mülheim and to the left of the entrance door to the library in Bottrop. Please note, however, that the media will not be taken out and processed until the following day, so that the loan period must end at least on the date of the following day to ensure punctual return.

Are you unable to come to the library yourself but need to return items urgently? You are free to have the items returned by a third party at your own risk. However, if the items are to be borrowed again to your account, the authorized person must present your student or library card.

In principle, you can renew almost all borrowed media yourself via KatalogPlus. To do this, log in via the Account tab with your university ID.

Interlibrary loans can only be renewed by library staff. If you wish to renew an interlibrary loan, please send us an e-mail a few days before the deadline so that we can request the renewal from the lending library.

You can reserve borrowed media free of charge via KatalogPlus. The person who has currently borrowed the desired title will be informed of the reservation and cannot extend the loan period any further. As soon as the title has arrived at the library, it will be ready for you to collect for 1 week. You will be notified by e-mail.
