Courses offered by the HRW Library

DO THE PATHS OF INFORMATION SEEM LOST TO YOU? WE SHOW YOU NEW WAYS ...

Are signatures cryptic characters for you? You wanted to do systematic research for your last term paper, but didn't quite know where to start? Do you usually find a lot of interesting things on Google, but rarely what you are looking for?

That doesn't have to be the case (anymore)! The HRW Library offers a wide range of courses to familiarize you with professional research techniques and tools. Come along, we look forward to your participation.

During a half-hour guided tour, participants get to know and use the library, its services and what it has to offer.

When:

This course is offered at the beginning of the semester and on request. You will be informed of the exact dates here in good time.

Where:

Meeting point at Campus Mülheim and Campus Bottrop at the information desk in the library

Can't find what you're looking for in the current course offerings?

Then use our Book a Librarian service.  An individual advisory service for all HRW students. We offer this free service for detailed questions that require more time and go beyond the general need for advice.

What topics do we offer individual advice on:

  • Efficient literature research for your academic work: thematic search with the help of Katalog Plus, DigiBib as well as specialist databases and Google
  • Literature management with Citavi
  • Citing correctly and copyright
  • Microsoft Word 2021
  • Writing advice

Please make an appointment using the following link:

The Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences provides its members with the reference management program Citavi free of charge.

Citavi is an important tool that provides you with optimal support for your academic work. In addition to literature management, Citavi offers you many other functions such as an extensive search pool and gives you the opportunity to plan and structure your tasks.

You can download Citavi at the following link: https://www.citavi.com/de

You can request your personal license data under the following link:

http://www.citavi.com/hs-ruhrwest

This 3-hour course explains how Citavi works. You will learn how to use this program and will then be able to use it for your reference management, so that you can, for example, automatically generate a bibliography.

You can find the current dates and registration in eCampus.

Even in an application-oriented degree course, many specialist texts and scripts, some of which are long, have to be read. In this course you will practise identifying academic texts efficiently and effectively and learn about important sources of information for literature research.

What is a citation anyway? What do I have to mark as a citation in an academic paper? How do I cite internet sources? Are there things that I am allowed to use without a citation? Am I allowed to cite works that I have not read myself? Where is the line between a legitimate citation and illegal plagiarism? We will answer these and many other questions in the course “Quoting correctly”. You will get an overview of the dos and don'ts of quoting and we will use examples to show you what a perfect quote looks like and how you can incorporate it into your work.

You can find the current dates and the registration form in eCampus.

Individual feedback on written and oral projects

  • Support with academic language design
  •     Tips for optimizing academic language skills and expanding subject-specific vocabulary
  • Impulses for planning writing, writing techniques and dealing with writing difficulties

Please contact us if you would like to use this service or send an e-mail to bibliothek@hs-ruhrwest.de.

The course provides an overview of the areas of copyright law relevant to studies, science and research and gives practical assistance with specific application questions. You will learn, for example, what rules apply if you want to publish your own work and what copyright issues need to be considered when using electronic resources such as e-books or electronic journals. We will explain what you need to bear in mind when using, copying and passing on copyrighted material or making it available online.

When:

This course is offered on request. Please contact the library staff.

In addition to some basic operating instructions for Word 2021, this course will teach you all the important tools for writing term papers and theses.
